Soundproof and fire-resistant glazed partitions for historical building in Copenhagen
Another piece of Denmark’s industrial architectural heritage has been revitalised in Carlsberg City, Copenhagen breathing new life into a historic building. The Boiler House, once responsible for powering the Carlsberg Brewery, has now been transformed into Copenhagen's newest cultural venue, dedicated to artistic expression through professional dance and choreography.
On 31st August 2024, the former Boiler House, a symbol of industrial strength and purpose, was filled with vibrant energy as the Dance Halls opened its doors for the first time, welcoming dance lovers and professional artists to the official unveiling of this new cultural landmark.
Spanning 4200 m², the building, now home to two stages and five studios, is designed to foster an atmosphere of creativity, music, movement, and artistic exploration. In preserving its industrial roots, the renovation carefully balanced modern needs with respect for the building's heritage, ensuring that critical elements such as fire safety, aesthetics, transparency, and acoustics were meticulously addressed.
As part of the renovation, the Dance Halls have incorporated fire-rated, soundproof glazed partition solutions, completed with matching doors. These elements are designed in a minimalist style that respects the industrial heritage of the space while focusing attention on the artistic activities taking place behind the glass.
A Dynamic Venue Demanding Superior Sound Insulation
Dance, as an art form, is highly sensitive to both the visual and acoustic qualities of its environment. The room's acoustics and aesthetic appeal are crucial for providing visitors and dancers at the Dance Halls with an immersive experience of the joy and energy of dance.
To enhance the acoustic environment, DEKO FG2 glazed partition systems with superior soundproofing have been installed in the dance studios and along the staircase leading to the large performance stage on the first floor. Additionally, DEKO has supplied soundproof glazed partitions for the dance studio on the second floor, where the glazed partitions offer a view of the stage and the main hall.
Beyond sound reduction, transparency is key to creating a visual connection throughout the building, allowing visitors to be inspired by the dynamic interplay of movement and creativity. In areas where soundproofing was less critical, DEKO FG fully glazed partitions and DEKO TD doors with overhead glazing were chosen, lending a majestic touch.
Maintaining Fire Safety in an Industrial Landmark
When renovating historic industrial buildings, it is essential to balance the preservation of the original structure with modern safety standards. For areas with stringent fire safety requirements, DEKO FG Fire EI 60 glazed partitions have been installed, ensuring that the building meets contemporary regulations while maintaining its historical character.
All the partition solutions were designed to be consistent, featuring dark profiles at the top and bottom, which frame the rooms, studios, and meeting spaces in a way that complements the minimalist interior design. The space’s design, minimalist in nature, allows the artistic expression within to take centre stage.
At the same time, the carefully preserved architectural details of the original industrial structure have been allowed to shine through, paying homage to the building's former life and role as a vital part of Copenhagen’s industrial past.
